Dr Wim Van Bortel obtained a master in Biology at the University of Antwerp Belgium and holds a specialisation in medical entomology from the Institut Pasteur, Paris. He worked in Africa in the context of malaria control and as researcher at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp. From 2010 till 2016 he was Senior Expert Vector-borne Diseases at the European Centre for Disease Prevention
and Control. Since 2017 he works at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp as senior Researcher in the Unit of Medical Entomology. His research focuses on the ecology of vectors and vector-borne diseases in order to improve control of these diseases.
