Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased  to invite you to submit original research articles or reviews for the Special Issue "Advances in Urban Pest Management in Europe".

The domestic and peri-domestic environment in European cities provides harborage  and  food for insects and  other arthropods   which  are  considered  pests,  either  because they bite, sting, suck blood, transmit parasites and pathogens,  contaminate food, damage wood or fabrics, or because they induce allergies or entomophobia.

This Special Issue aims to report recent advances in urban pest management strategies against household and structural pest insects and other arthropods  encountered in Europe, including synthetic insecticides and repellents, insecticide resistance management, botanical, microbial and biological control agents, nanotechnology, attract and kill strategies, transgenic and biotechnological control methods,  sterile insect technique, modified atmospheres, and others.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

This Special Issue is designed to publish high-quality review papers  in Toxics . The issue  will highlight  a diverse  set of topics related  to the effects of pesticides on insects and other Arthropods. The scope of this Special Issue includes but  is  not  limited to  the  lethal  and  sublethal  effect of pesticides, their impact caused  at the population and/or community level, pesticides' toxic effects, and ecotoxicology.  We  are  particularly  interested  in manuscripts that include research articles, review articles, short communications, and opinion articles related to the extended topic of 'Effect of Pesticides on Insects and Other Arthropods'.

Disease  and  pest  management  in  many  crops  may  be really challenging. As harvest  time approaches,   farmers have limited alternatives to chemical control in order to avoid chemical residues in the produce. At this point, especially, fruits with high sugar content,  such as grapes, become   more   susceptible  to   post-harvest   pests   and diseases, e.g., fungi causing rot, adding an extra challenge in the  puzzle of crop  protection. Another problem  that farmers need to overcome is the resistance that pests and pathogens  develop in pesticides, along with the small number  of chemical products  that  can be used legally in many countries. The attractive alternative strategy, in order to avoid chemical residues in fruits and vegetables, is biological control. In addition, when it comes  to cankers and vascular diseases, things are getting even more intriguing as  chemical control  strategies are  not  always available or efficient and, often, the only available means is prevention. Therefore, this Special Issue welcomes articles that  address  sound  tools  helping to  reduce  the  use  of synthetic chemical pesticides and promote sustainable agriculture in woody crops.

Drastic deforestation, poor forest management and forest hygiene, alongside the  climate change  threat  are considered as major threats to the stability of forest resources. Biotic factors, like insect pests and microorganisms, and abiotic factors, like wildfires, are considered as major threats worldwide. With forest exploitation and continuous forest decline, sustainable practices that preserve the balance between human needs and the environment are needed to ensure forest viability.

Adaptive management practices, under the frame of multi- purpose silviculture, alongside policies that aim to protect the  natural  environment and  biodiversity,  are  crucial to maintaining the effective use of forest resources.

Keywords:

  • Forest protection
  • Wildfires
  • Forest management
  • Forest pests and diseases
  • Global change

Dear Colleagues,

  • The focus of this Special Issue is on recent  advances  in sustainable insect production related to (but not limited to):
  • Insect-rearing technologies and methods (diet formulations, rearing protocols, etc.);
  • The inclusion of insects in animal diets and aquafeeds (feeding trials, etc.);
  • Environmental footprints;
  • Insect-based food and feed products (insect processing, nutritional value, etc.);
  • Economic and business aspects (marketing, etc.); Waste management through insect bioconversion; Insect-plant synergies for complete  protein design in food and feed;
  • Novel uses of insects and  their products/byproducts (fertilizers, etc.);
  • Public perception and consumers'  acceptance of the use of insects for food and feed;
  • Lifecycle assessment (LCA), social LCA (SLCA), and technoeconomic assessment (TEA).

Therefore, we kindly invite you to submit papers  to this Special Issue that  will further illuminate and  unfold the potential of insect exploitation.
